#613-Pinot Passion |
You’ve seen them in the movie “Sideways,” now
taste them from the wineries-the great Pinot Noirs
of Santa Barbara County. Foley and Lincourt
are two of the county’s best producers. I’ll
visit both, starting in the vineyards and ending
in the tasting room where we can pop a few bottles
and taste the magic ourselves. After,
it’s a trip to Sonoma for the full-bodied wines
of Foppiano Vineyards. Last, but certainly
not least, I’ll head to San Francisco to experience
the luxury, grandeur, and great cuisine of the Fairmont
Hotel-San Francisco. If you want great
wine, beautiful scenery, classic architecture, and
unforgettable food, then this is the show for you. If
you don’t, well, ESPN is right up the dial. |

#614-Inside Jalisco |
Head
to the blue agave fields outside the town of Tequila,
and witness the age-old process for making one
of the world’s finest tequilas-Don Eduardo. Founded
by the Orendain family, one of Mexico’s leading
tequila producers, Don Eduardo tequila uses only
the finest, most mature, blue agave-slow cooks them
to perfection, triple distills the liquid for extra
smoothness, and ages then to perfection. The
result is some of the best tequila you will ever
taste. Later, I’ll head over the
mountains to the resort town of Puerto Vallarta for
a tour of two of its most impressive resorts, Dreams
and the Presidente Intercontinental.
If this doesn’t have you longing for a sip
of tequila and some prime time beach time, nothing
will! |

#615 Sparkling Mendocino-Sonoma Sojourn |
Mendocino
County’s Anderson Valley might
just be the best place in America for sparkling wine. And,
you don’t have to take my word for it. Just
try some of the offerings from Roederer Estate and
Scharffenberger. Two very different expressions
of sparkling wine from a pair of neighbors, Roederer
Estate and Scharffenberger both make strong statements
for the quality of the fruit from the Anderson Valley. Down
in the Sonoma Valley, meantime, they’ve got
a different story to tell, the story of “the
house of big reds,” St. Francis winery. Winemaker
Tom Mackey will show me why St. Francis got that
nickname, and why he loves what he does and where
he does it! |

#616-Honoring Heirloom Tomatoes |
It’s Kendall-Jackson’s annual Heirloom
Tomato Festival where tomatoes and K-J wines take
center stage. If you love tomatoes specifically,
great food in general, and lovely wines to wash it
all down, then this is the event for you. Sample
the festival, K-J’s impressive sensory garden,
and equally impressive wines.
Later, we’ll head to the town of Sonoma for more great food at three terrific
Sonoma restaurants, and one upscale boutique hotel. Finally, it’s
back up valley for a visit to Dry Creek Vineyards. From Sauvignon
Blanc to Zinfandel and a lot of things in between, Dry Creek Vineyards has been
a leading Sonoma winery for years. Find out why as Culinary Travels
with Dave Eckert soaks up Sonoma County. |
